Our Team

OffCenter runs smoothly thanks to the contributions of many, many people including dedicated volunteers, interns, our board of directors and of course — our staff!

We couldn’t do what we do without the support of the fantastic interns and volunteers that join us weekly from Southwestern College, UNM, high school students from Amy Biehl & South Valley Academy, and many other members of our community! Interested in volunteering? Find info about volunteering on the Connect page here.

Our board of directors stewards OffCenter with care and enthusiasm for our organization’s past, present and future.

Our Staff

Mika Maloney

Executive Director

Mika (she/her) found OffCenter after moving into the neighborhood in 2021, intrigued by the adorable Little Houses in the window display and glimpses of funky art materials inside. A writer and artist who enjoys using a wide range of materials, playful making is central to her own creative practice. Supporting others in their creative work invigorates her, whether that’s through introducing someone to a new material or method, sharing a creative prompt, or working to keep things running smoothly at OffCenter. In total awe of the creativity and connection that happens every day at OffCenter, she considers it an honor to get to work and play at such a magical place. Prior to beginning work here as the Executive Director, Mika was the program director at Spokane Arts where she helped support the public art program in Spokane Washington. In a previous life, she was a baker and owned her own bakery for several years.

In addition to her work at OffCenter, she writes, leads poetry workshops, and plays around with weaving, quilting, painting and collage. Find more of her artwork and writing here.

Take a class with Mika: Small Poems - Big Edits, Tuesday, March 19, 5-7 p.m. Details here.

Ashley

Studio Manager

Ashley (she/her) started with OffCenter as a volunteer in 2013, helping out both in the studio and during OffCenter’s We Art the People Folk Art Festival. In 2019 she began working as a studio assistant, and currently serves as our (beloved!) Studio Manager.
In her creative practice, she works mostly with fiber. She loves to mend items giving them new life. Keeping items, especially fiber, out of landfills is a passion of hers. A mixed media artist, she also teaches mixed media jewelry and mixed media assemblage classes at OffCenter.  On the second Thursday of each month, Ashley leads the drop-in group Strengthening Creativity. What she loves most about her job is making art accessible to all people. She enjoys all the community members she gets to interact with in the studio!

Take a class with Ashley: Mixed Media Assemblage, Thursday, March 28, 6-8 p.m. Details here. Or drop in for Strengthening Creativity, every 2nd Thursday from 6-8 p.m.

Dre

Printmaking Studio Manager

From an early age, it was clear that art was more than just a hobby for Dre (she/her, they/them) - it was a way of life. Influenced by her grandfather, a painter and muralist in Mexico, Dre developed a passion for painting and an appreciation for other renowned artists including Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Dre’s appreciation for pop culture, graphic art, and horror have become major influences on their art.

Growing up in Las Cruces, NM, in a household that valued self-expression and emotional well-being, they developed a unique artistic style that seamlessly combines various mediums and techniques. After studying fine arts and psychology at New Mexico State University, recognizing the transformative power art holds in healing and self-discovery, Dre got her graduate degree in Art Therapy from Southwestern College. Their artistic journey has been deeply influenced by their personal experiences and struggles, shaping their empathetic approach towards helping others through art.

Dre began volunteering as an intern at OffCenter in 2021 while completing her master's in art therapy. As an intern, Dre was able to learn a variety of art making methods and was involved in the development of OffCenter’s printmaking program. After a year as an intern, they joined the staff as a Studio Assistant and are now our Printmaking Shop Manager. As a developing artist, they continue to grow their unique style of art making involving both printmaking methods and painting.

Zimmy

Studio Coordinator

Zimmy (they/them) is OffCenter's Studio Coordinator. Zimmy was part of their first ever gallery show at OffCenter, as part of the emerging artist program in 2022. A month later, in June 2022, they started as a Studio Assistant and have been in love with the OffCenter community ever since! Art has always been central to Zimmy's life- they love to draw, paint, knit, screen print, block print, and explore new materials. They’re so grateful for the home they've found at OffCenter. Through this space they're able to combine their love of art, dedication to community building, passion for disability justice, and belief in the power of mutual aid. Zimmy is constantly inspired not only by the incredible artwork studio participants create, but also by the way people treat each other in the studio. Catch them at OffCenter teaching watercolor classes, losing it over paintings made by toddlers, and happily organizing the bin wall over... and over... and over again!

Take a class with Zimmy: Sign up for Watercolor Meditative Marathon here and Intro to Drawing here!

Sonia

Gallery Coordinator

Sonia (she/her) is the Gallery Coordinator at OffCenter Arts, where she curates our retail space to showcase local artists.

Outside of the studio, Sonia is first and foremost a mother of two amazing boys, a girl on the way, and a wife.

When she is not at OffCenter or busy being a mom, she can be found at her studio at The Mothership Alumni Gallery, also located in the heart of downtown Albuquerque.  She specializes in oil painting focusing on metaphysical and religious themes with an all-around ethereal style.  Aside from being multifaceted in the arts in interior design, fine art, sewing, photography, she is an award winning artist locally, nationally, and internationally.  Find more about Sonia and her artwork at her website sonialuevano.com

September

Program Coordinator

As someone who uses the space in his car (where the backseats used to be) to collect free art supplies, September (he/him) felt a kindred spirit in OffCenter the second he heard about it while chatting with someone outside a grocery store. In August 2023, he started working as the Program Coordinator, inspired by the humanity born of OffCenter’s devotion to generosity. When he’s not setting up workshops or up to his elbows in a spreadsheet, September also welds tables out of “trash” and writes love letters to the world.

Alden

Studio Assistant & Open Sew Facilitator

Alden (they/them, he/him) comes from a family of knitters, crochets, and sewists. Alden began knitting and crocheting as a kid and has continued on with the craft creating everything from sweaters and socks to amigurumi toys. They loved wearing handmade clothing and knitted socks from their grandmothers as a kid and this love affair continues as they now sew their own clothing.

Alden learned how to use a sewing machine as a child, but didn't really start sewing until they started hemming their own pants as an adult; at 5'2" tall it's impossible to find pants short enough. From pant hemming they went on to modify t-shirts and alter other existing garments. Alden began sewing garments from scratch in 2018, and their obsession hasn't ceased; it all started with a pair of overalls made out of a delightful mustard yellow denim. Since then, Alden has sewn more overalls, coveralls, sweatshirts, countless pairs of pajama pants, and a handful of button down shirts.

Alden was introduced to OffCenter in 2022 through a screen printing class and has been involved ever since taking and teaching classes, facilitating Open Sew on Wednesday evenings, and now on staff as a Studio Assistant. In addition to fiber arts, Alden enjoys printmaking, mixed media, and three-dimensional art making. They love teaching sewing classes and helping people build their confidence at using a sewing machine. When they aren't making art, they can be found walking or biking around town, on a dance floor somewhere, cooking and baking, or petting their two cats. Their current artistic dream is to create their own clothing line; specifically one tailored to trans masculine bodies because everyone deserves to feel good and confident in the clothes we wear. Playing with clothing as a form of self-expression as a teenager had a big impact on their quirky and unique sense of style and very much carries over into how they dress and think about fashion today.

Take a class with Alden: watch for more sewing & fiber art classes with Alden later this spring!

Or drop by for Open Sew every Wednesday evening, from 6-8 p.m.
