DIY Poetry Bookmaking

from $0.00

Ready to take your poetry or writing and create something physical to share with the world? Whether you have one completed poem or dozens, this workshop series will cover a variety of ways to prep and collect your writing in a physical form - whether that's a single page broadside, a simple zine, or a full chapbook! Learn different options for creating a fun DIY book filled with your poetry and begin to craft your project.

Session one:
In the first class we'll cover making final edits to your poems, deciding on formatting, and considering your poems as a cohesive collection (themes, how to order, what to do with "scraps"). We'll also look at different options for creating DIY books and prints including chapbooks, zines, broadsides, and hacked journals. We'll create a simple draft project to organize your ideas and get your creativity running!

Session two:
In the second session, we'll print our work and make it into something physical! Hack a journal with your poetry, build a chapbook, or craft a zine. Participants will learn about a variety of methods for collecting and sharing their artwork. Workshop time will include demos of a variety of methods as well as work time to craft your own project.

Depending on the style of book/project that you decide to create, you might not finish during the workshop but you'll leave with materials, instruction, resources, and inspiration to complete your chapbook, zine, or other project.

*This is not a generative writing class. Bring your completed poems or other writings that you are ready to collect and share. Bring 2 printed copies of each poem you'd like to include in your book to the first class. Before the first class, we'll email instructions for sending us your poetry/writing if you'd like to print or make copies at OffCenter. (Up to 20 pages printed or copied per participant.) Check in with Mika (mika@offcenterarts.org) if you have questions about what you need to prepare or bring for the first class!

Tuesdays, October 28 & November 11, 5-8pm

At OffCenter Community Arts Project, 808 Park Ave SW, ABQ.

She finds inspiration in the rich histories of quilting, design, and decorative arts that have brought beauty to utilitarian objects throughout human history. Her current writing project is a prose poem hybrid experiment exploring themes of home, money, home buying, home making, debt, marriage, partnership, and community; drawing from historical lending practices, the current housing crisis, and pretty much every movie Julia Roberts has been in.

Refund Policy: All of our classes have limited capacity and often sell out. Please let us know if you are unable to attend a class you’ve registered for so we can open up the spot for someone else. If you would like a refund for your class registration fee, you must let us know at least 48 hours ahead of the class start time. Cancellations received within 48 hours or less of class start times are not eligible for refunds, but your class fee can be transferred to a future class registration instead. If you have questions about your class registration, or to request a refund or class transfer, please call, email, or talk to staff in person at OffCenter during Open Studio hours.

Why are there multiple prices? All of our classes are offered at a sliding scale, with a free option available to anyone that requests it. When possible, we make the base option available in order to partly cover the cost of the class. The core price is the "true" cost of the class OffCenter needs to cover paying our teachers and providing supplies and materials. If you are able to support at a higher level, paying the supporter price helps ensure we're able to continue offering a variety of classes and keep free spaces open for anyone that needs.

There are a limited number of free spots available online. If these are sold out, please email, call, or drop by the studio to sign up! Email info@offcenterarts.org.
