Fukurotoji: Japanese Stab Stitch Bookbinding

from $0.00

Japanese stab stitch binding, fukurotoji, has been a popular style of binding books in China, Japan, and Korea since the 13th century, and for good reason: it's gorgeous!

The method of stitching can be as simple or complex as you choose, and many designs are possible. It's also an excellent way to bind loose pages together. In this class, we'll focus on the easiest method, and instructions will be provided for 3 additional designs for students to try at their leisure.

Beginner friendly; no bookbinding experience is required, though it is helpful if you know how to hand sew.

Saturday, March 7, 2:30-5:30 pm

At OffCenter Community Arts Project, 808 Park Ave SW, ABQ.

Tiered pricing: Free $0 / Base $15 / Core $30 / Supporter $45

Teacher bio: A lifelong book lover and avid enthusiast of the book arts, Nic Heersema first became interested in understanding the structure and conservation of books while working at the Virginia Tech University library. This interest morphed into a passion for researching and recreating historical bookbinding methods which Nic pursues as part of an international historic arts society. Nic has been teaching bookbinding classes since 2020 and is excited to continue teaching at OffCenter!

All materials provided. No experience necessary.

Unless otherwise specified, OffCenter classes and workshops are intended for ages 16+.

Refund Policy: All of our classes have limited capacity and often sell out. Please let us know if you are unable to attend a class you’ve registered for so we can open up the spot for someone else. If you would like a refund for your class registration fee, you must let us know at least 48 hours ahead of the class start time. Cancellations received within 48 hours or less of class start times are not eligible for refunds, but your class fee can be transferred to a future class registration instead. If you have questions about your class registration, or to request a refund or class transfer, please call, email, or talk to staff in person at OffCenter during Open Studio hours.

Why are there multiple prices? All of our classes are offered at a sliding scale, with a free option available to anyone that requests it. When possible, we make the base option available in order to partly cover the cost of the class. The core price is the "true" cost of the class OffCenter needs to cover paying our teachers and providing supplies and materials. If you are able to support at a higher level, paying the supporter price helps ensure we're able to continue offering a variety of classes and keep free spaces open for anyone that needs.

There are a limited number of free spots available online. If these are sold out, please email, call, or drop by the studio to sign up! Email info@offcenterarts.org.
